Photographs of Springfield Industrial Area Construction

The Springfield Industrial Area is intertwined with the Mainline Yard, also known as the Springfield Yard or more properly the Ridgely Yard. Industries at Springfield are scattered around the Springfield area of the layout, just as the industries were scattered about the City of Springfield.

This page captures the evolution of this area on the layout as new buildings are added or changed.

The first industry to be installed on the layout is the J. C. Ayling & Company, toy and game manufacturer.

This was actually an industry served by the B&O Railroad in Springfield. This building probably bears little if any resemblance to the actual building, but I have not found any photographs of that company.

The Rink and Sheib Elevator Company has been installed. This industry represents a grain elevator in Springfield that was served by the B&O during the era I am modeling.

Due to a lack of photographs from this era, this industry is completely freelanced. Any resemblance between this model and the actual Rink and Sheib elevator is purely coincidental.

Work will now proceed on the ballasting and scenicing of this small piece of the layout.

A new industry has been installed in Springfield, the Springfield Mattress Company.

This represents an industry that was served by the B&O in Springfield in the timeframe of the layout.

Since this company no longer exists, this structure is purely a figment of my imagination.

Next door to the mattress factory the Charles Underfanger Warehouse has been installed.

This unlikely sounding name was, indeed, the name of a warehouse company served by the B&O in Springfield during the era represented by the layout.

A new industry has joined the lineup, Capital City Paper
